Every day families say good-bye as a loved one serving in the military goes off to take up a post somewhere in the world. For many, these are areas of conflict where they face constant danger. Some do not make it home. Others come home physically injured. Still others come home with injuries that are not visible to the eye, especially to strangers.

Author T. Jacira Paolino‘s “The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash” is a heartwarming and timely story about a serious aftereffect of war. Miyaku is a young woman who consults with the village witch for a magic potion to turn her husband back into the man he was prior to serving in the war. The witch agrees to help her, but Miyaku must first bring her a freshly plucked eyelash from a grizzly bear. Desperate for her husband to be the man she once knew, Miyaku does as the witch asks and is surprised by what she learns.

Originally published by Ms. Paolino in Italian as “La storia della ciglia dell’orso grizzly”, this book won the 2006 Silver Award (Farfallo d’Argento) at the XXIV National 50 & Più Competition for Prose in Italy.

Readers of all ages will be moved by the universal story told in “The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash”. Many families today can relate to Miyaku’s sorrow and love for her husband as they encounter difficulties when their loved ones return from war.
